THE Voice discovery Prinnie Stevens knows it's now or never to drop her debut solo single as another crop of covers talent hits the iTunes charts.

Stevens followed her star turn on the inaugural The Voice series with a duets album with best friend Mahalia Barnes and now has been signed for a solo career by the show's label Universal.

Her solo single, the infectious pop confection Don't Wake Me Up, was earmarked for Brit It girl Jessie J but found its way to the Australian singer via Kyle Sandiland's manager Andrew Hawkins.

Stevens said the planets had aligned to deliver the right song to her at the right time, just as The Voice returns to our screens and she unleashes her fierce alter ego on Celebrity Apprentice this month.

"I really thought I was ready when I was younger but you're not,'' she said.

"I have come from the bottom, been a back-up singer, a back-up dance, a stylist, done everything as a struggling musician that you have to do to pay the rent and support your family.

"Getting here now is so much sweeter.''

She faces even more competition for commercial radio airtime and the attention of Australian pop fans as The Voice's season two contestants climb up the iTunes charts.

Both first nighters Celia Pavey and Kaity Dunstan made an impression on the top 30 songs chart with their respective covers of Scarborough Fair and Brand New Key.

Stevens is hopeful that Don't Wake Me Up, which is released on April 15, will find favour with the gatekeepers of the airwaves.

"It's a song I was meant to do. I do so much Katy Perry and Jessie J and Kesha stuff in my set and this song now shows me the kind of singer I am,'' she said.

Stevens said she was putting her support behind The Voice campaign of her friend Lyric McFarland, who landed on Team Joel last night.

"I have heard her sing Shy Guy 1000 times and she nails it every time. She's just like me, a working singer and a mum, so I am glad to see more of us on the show this year,'' Stevens said.
