WOLFMOTHER frontman Andrew Stockdale says he went solo because the name of his Grammy-winning band no longer speaks to him.

Once Wolfmother finishes touring the country as the support act for Aerosmith, Stockdale will put the rock outfit on hiatus and focus on a solo career.

Stockdale, Myles Heskett and Chris Ross formed Wolfmother in 2000, but his bandmates quit five years ago.

"When they quit, I should have ditched the name," he said.

"I thought I had a good thing going, and could write more songs like that. But I want to expand from the name. Wolfmother doesn't really speak to me anymore.

That name embodied myself, Chris and Myles. It's exciting to get out of Wolfmother and the expectation of releasing music with that title."

He has released a new EP, Keep Moving, with an album due in June.

"There's rock and roll, boogie rock, acoustic songs, and things written on a banjo," he said.

"It's exciting to get out of Wolfmother, and the expectation of releasing music with that title."
