ARNOLD Schwarzenegger may have declared Sam Worthington "a real go-getter" and worthy action-hero successor, but if the Aussie star thought he'd be treated like a conquering hero when he returned to Perth to shoot the surfing drama Drift, he had another thing coming.

In Sydney to promote the movie today, Worthington recalled his welcome to set from his old mate and Drift co-star, Myles Pollard.

"My first day, Myles took me out, there I am squeezed into a wet suit looking like a big fat f---in’ seal, we’re in the middle of the horizon, nowhere, and all I get is this: ‘If the wave dumps on you, you know what to do – swim to the bottom, hang on and we’ll find you with a jet ski. You’ll be right, mate. Welcome to Margaret River, Hollywood'."

"And if you’re cold, bad luck, ’cos we can’t afford to re-shoot," added Pollard.

"And if you drown, we’ll ask Jim Cameron because he’s got all the CG f---in’ maps of you anyway," Worthington laughed.

Worthington shot the action film Ten with Schwarzenegger in Atlanta last year - making headlines when he was arrested after getting into a fight outside a restaurant in the city.

The actor is signed on for two Avatar sequels (which James Cameron is in the process of writing) but declined to discuss future roles: "There’s some stuff coming up but my deals aren’t done so I’m not allowed to talk about them."

Worthington and former McLeod’s Daughters star Pollard go back 16 years - meeting when they auditioned for NIDA at the same time. Together, they sound like trouble.

"No, we don’t get in trouble. Perfect gentlemen,' Worthington insisted.

Pollard, who also produced Drift, jokes they couldn’t afford stunt doubles on the movie because of Worthington’s fee.

"Sam has proved himself enough, he’s a very respected artist and friend as well," Pollard said.

"It’s nice to be able to just treat him as a human being - on set and in real life. It’s very humbling … for him."

Drift, which also stars Aussie Twilight actor Xavier Samuel, opens May 2.
