THE world's coolest dance act, Daft Punk, have sampled Aussie rockers Sherbet on their new album.

Daft Punk's Random Access Memories contains only one sample, a break from their usual working methods.

That sample comes from Sherbet’s 1981 single We Ride Tonight, when the band had shortened their name to The Sherbs.

The song was not a hit in Australia, but was an American rock radio hit in 1982.

Band member Thomas Bangalter has used We Ride Tonight to close his DJ sets in the past.

We Ride Tonight was written by Sherbet members Daryl Braithwaite, Garth Porter and Tony Mitchell.

The French duo steered away from sampling on the new album, which is released on May 17.

"We wanted to do what we used to do with machines and samplers but with people," Bangalter told Rolling Stone this month.

The album features guests Nile Rodgers, Pharrell Williams, Julian Casablancas and Giorgio Moroder.

The duo have chosen NSW town Wee Waa to launch the album at a listening party on May 17.

A snippet of new song Get Lucky, featuring Rodgers and Williams, was aired at the Coachella music festival on the weekend.

Daryl Braithwaite declined to comment on the surprise sample today.

Braithwaite will join James Reyne, Ross Wilson and Joe Camilleri for the APIA Time of Our Life tour which kicks off in Warragul on April 24 before touring nationally throughout May.
