MICHAEL Paynter knows better than anyone that nice guys don't always finish first.

Hailed by Delta Goodrem as one of the greatest male vocalists Australia has ever produced, the 27-year-old former Sony signing has already tasted chart success, then watched the dream happen for those around him.

After his 2010 single, Love The Fall went platinum, Paynter settled for playing a supporting role for everyone from Seal and John Farnham to Icehouse and his biggest fans, The Veronicas.

But stepping out of their spotlight and back into his own on The Voice, it was the reborn Melbourne singer's humility which won him the show's superstar coaches and earned him his second chance at the big time.

Putting at risk his comfortable living as a studio singer and touring bass player for his latest shot at a solo career, Paynter says contesting the TV series was a risk worth taking.

"This is the most daring thing I have ever done but I didn't want to get to the end of my life and wonder 'what might have happened if I'd gone on that show?'" he told News Limited.

"The Voice is the complete opposite of a safe place. To be respected in the industry and have worked really hard for so many years, this was a big risk."

The talented singer holds no ill will against the record label which dropped him, admitting he didn't know who he was as much as they didn't know how to package him.

"People at (Sony) are really good friends, but it's hard if you are trying to put out an album when you don't know what your point of view is, what you want to say, who you are. The last couple of years I've found myself and got back to the reason I do music...making that connection with people."

He connected with Joel Madden, joining Team Joel, after the Good Charlotte rocker praised his positive attitude.

Paynter said: "I would rather that shine through than my voice."

Getting another go on the TV talent show roundabout was former Australian Idol finalist, Queenslander Mitchell Steele, who won a spot on Team Delta for his take on Adele's hit, One And Only.

Imogen Brough

Showing all the composure of an industry veteran and with a sound akin to chart favourite Florence Welsh, it was another Melbourne singer, Imogen Brough who sparked another all-in coaching battle for her talents.

The Celtic music graduate revealed she had rehearsed for the key moments in her audition when she thought the chairs would turn around (with help from her family who practised turning their kitchen chairs for her).

With her mum in the studio audience in a flood of tears, the 21-year-old from Geelong said it was most "surreal moment of my life."

Passionate about the genre which gave the world Enya, the Team Ricky hopeful said she "won't let the fact people think (celtic music) is dorky to affect me."
