A US food website has been accused of trying to capitalise on the Boston bombings tragedy after posting a series of insensitive tweets about the incident.
New York based food and drink site Epicurious caused outrage on social media last night after it tweeted a link to a scone recipe as some sort of bizarre tribute to the victims.
"In honor of Boston and New England, may we suggest: whole-grain cranberry scones!" it tweeted.
Earlier the food site - which has more than 385,000 Twitter followers - had tweeted a link to a recipe for "cinnamon scented breakfast quinoa", along with the message: "Boston, our hearts are with you. Here's a bowl of breakfast energy we could all use to start today."
The backlash was swift, with many users declaring Epicurious "out of touch" and "offensive", and their tweets "an epic Twitter mess".
"What the hell was Epicurious thinking?" tweeted one user.
"Seriously Epicurious who thought these tweets were appropriate? Shame on you," tweeted another.
Epicurious later issued an apology via Twitter, saying: "Our food tweets this morning were, frankly, insensitive. Our deepest, sincere apologies."
Epicurious' tactless slip-up isn't the first to be branded a corporate social media fail.
Last year fashion website Celeb Boutique caused outrage when it tweeted a link to its "Aurora dress" just hours after the deadly cinema shooting in Aurora, Colorado, while Canadian supermarket chain President's Choice drew criticism for an insensitive tweet comparing Hurricane Sandy to a Halloween drink.
