Tweets reveal user's age, gender

The Dutch have figured out a way to determine the age and gender of a person based on their Tweets. Source: Supplied

RESEARCHERS at a Dutch university have developed an online program that is able give the age and gender of users purely based on the content they post on the social network Twitter.

Based on data from almost 3000 Twitter users, researchers at the Twente University near the eastern city of Enschede have compiled lists of words and sequences corresponding with different ages and specific genders.

Dong Nguyen, a doctoral student in computer sciences said users simply had to enter their username into the online program which then calculated age and gender by comparing the last 200 tweets with the words and phrases in its database.

"The distinction between men and women is actually very stereotypical," said Ms Nguyen, one of the participants in the project: "Men talk about football and women about their nails."

"In terms of age, younger users talk about themselves a lot more and use a lot of emoticons while older people use longer words and sentences," she told AFP.

Emoticons are a number of icons such as a "smiley face" to portray the writer's mood or facial expression in a tweet.

The program, which only analyses tweets in Dutch for now, has a margin error of four years, which dips for younger users and increases when users are older.

"We note that users use more uniform language from about 35 years and older. There are larger differences between a users aged 15 and 20 then there are between users aged 45 and 55," Ms Nguyen said.

Researchers at Twente in collaboration with the Meertens Dutch language and culture institute, were looking at updating the program for other languages and adapting for popular networking sites such as Facebook.

Epicurious sends tacky Boston tweets

Epicurious Boston tweets

A US food website has been accused of trying to capitalise on the Boston bombings tragedy after posting a series of insensitive tweets about the incident.

New York based food and drink site Epicurious caused outrage on social media last night after it tweeted a link to a scone recipe as some sort of bizarre tribute to the victims.

"In honor of Boston and New England, may we suggest: whole-grain cranberry scones!" it tweeted.

Earlier the food site - which has more than 385,000 Twitter followers - had tweeted a link to a recipe for "cinnamon scented breakfast quinoa", along with the message: "Boston, our hearts are with you. Here's a bowl of breakfast energy we could all use to start today."

The backlash was swift, with many users declaring Epicurious "out of touch" and "offensive", and their tweets "an epic Twitter mess".

"What the hell was Epicurious thinking?" tweeted one user.

"Seriously Epicurious who thought these tweets were appropriate? Shame on you," tweeted another.

Epicurious later issued an apology via Twitter, saying: "Our food tweets this morning were, frankly, insensitive. Our deepest, sincere apologies."

Epicurious' tactless slip-up isn't the first to be branded a corporate social media fail.

Last year fashion website Celeb Boutique caused outrage when it tweeted a link to its "Aurora dress" just hours after the deadly cinema shooting in Aurora, Colorado, while Canadian supermarket chain President's Choice drew criticism for an insensitive tweet comparing Hurricane Sandy to a Halloween drink.

YOKO Ono has never been one to shy away from controversy.

On what would have been her 44th wedding anniversary to John Lennon, the peace activist tweeted a picture of the Beatles' blood-stained glasses and described America as a "war zone".

Ono posted the image in a number of tweets yesterday, including a message that more than one million people have been killed by guns in the USA since Lennon was shot and killed by Mark Chapman on December 8, 1980.

This comes just a day after US legislators dropped their efforts to include a ban on assault weapons in the US Senate's gun control bill, conceding the ban did not have enough votes.

Meanwhile, Colorado's Governor John Hickenlooper fought back tears at a dedication to the State's prison chief, who was shot in the chest at point blank range in the latest US-shooting yesterday.

The State was also home to the Aurora theatre massacre, where 12 people were killed in the infamous Batman shootings.

This is not the first we've seen of Lennon's bloodstained glasses.

It was the cover art for her 1981 album, Season of Glass, released less than six-months after Lennon's murder.

Lennon and Ono were married in Gibraltar on March 20, 1969.

They spent their honeymoon in Amsterdam campaigning for peace with a week-long bed-in during the Vietnam War.

At the time of publishing, all of Ono's tweets combined had garnered more than 6500 retweets.

MOTLEY Crue rocker Vince Neil is back online after being admitted to a Sydney hospital on Sunday night to remove kidney stones.

Neil was operated on Monday morning and according to bandmate Nikki Sixx the operation was a success.

Within 30 minutes of the operation, Neil tweeted, "Just out of surgery. Spent night in hospital probably have to again tonight. Thank you all for the kind words and prayers".

He also sent thanks to the staff of the hospital. "Huge thank you to all the paramedics at the All Phones Arena, the ambulance paramedics, the nurses, doctors and Staff," he tweeted.

Sixx updated fans by saying: "Hey guys, I just woke here in Sydney. As many have heard we had to cut our set short by 4 songs last night due to Vince be in severe pain on stage... He was doubled over on his dressing room floor 5 minutes till show time and was told by the promoter to not even play but Vince said he couldn't do that to the fans. I've seen Vinnie go onstage with broken bones, his voice completely blown out and torn ligaments but he never ever cancels. Just like an athlete you sometimes have to play through the pain but last night it became to excruciating.

"I was texting with Vince most of the night last night as he was just waiting for the doctor to come back with the test results. This morning we found out he had to be admitted into surgery to remove kidney stones. He Just got out 5 minutes ago and the doctors said everything went well in the operating room. I am going to the hospital to see him before I head to Brisbane. Will update you more later... Nikki'".

Motley Crue are touring Australia with Kiss and Thin Lizzy. The next show is scheduled for Tuesday night in Brisbane.

Manager Alan Kovac expects the Tuesday night show will go on. "In nearly 20 years of managing Motley Crue, I can't recall a show the band has cancelled,'" he said.

All going well Neil should be well enough to perform in Brisbane.
