AUSTRALIAN voters could soon be rocking out to Julia Gillard's knitting music playlist or favourite workout songs as part of an attempt to win fans on social media, Obama-style.

The Prime Minister will this month become the second world leader after the US President to join online music streaming service Spotify, where she will publish her own music playlists as part of ongoing efforts to woo younger voters ahead of the September election.

Barack Obama and first lady Michelle won thousands of fans when they joined the service in 2012, publishing a ''Campaign Playlist'' featuring tunes by Bruce Springsteen, U2 and Jay-Z, and ''Michelle's Workout Playlist'' featuring Michael Jackson and Jennifer Lopez.

Ms Gillard will join Aussie celebrities such as pop star Ricki-Lee, X Factor judge Dannii Minogue and rugby union players Adam Ashley Cooper and James Horwill as a ''verified'' user of Spotify, where fans will be able to ''follow'' her and listen to her favourite songs.

A spokesperson for Ms Gillard said the PM would not be taking an overt campaign approach with her first playlist, which will simply be called ''Julia's Playlist'' and will feature a strong Australian theme.

The spokesperson said the PM will choose an ''eclectic mix'' of music by Aussie artists including Kylie Minogue, Cold Chisel, Jessica Mauboy, Gotye and Perth rockers Birds of Tokyo.

She'll also be jamming to classic hits by her own federal education minister Peter Garrett, with Midnight Oil confirmed to feature alongside the theme song for her favourite football team the Western Bulldogs.

Taking a cue directly from Obama's playbook, Ms Gillard will also include tracks by Bruce Springsteen as well as 1980s pop superstars Blondie.

A future playlist could be titled ''Songs to Knit To'', the spokesperson said, to match the PM's love of knitting, and feature ''a mixture of personal favourites and songs chosen by her followers''.

Coming weeks after Ms Gillard announced plans to appeal to women through social networks like Instagram, online pinboard Pinterest and ''mummy'' bloggers, the move to Spotify appears to be an attempt to now appeal to younger voters, with the music network's core audience aged 18 to 35.

''The PM is a keen fan of music but she's also a keen user of social media,'' the spokesperson said.

''Clearly there's a large audience out there that have got a connection with the Prime Minister and this seemed like the logical next step.''

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott would not confirm if he had similar plans.
