Apple asks for directions over maps

AFTER five months, Apple has finally learned that when you get lost in Australia, it's best to ask a local for directions.

The US tech giant is advertising for a Sydney-based software engineer to fix its beleaguered Apple Maps software, just weeks after police and fire authorities issued safety warnings about its use.

A new job ad on the Apple website is calling for a full time "maps ground truth data specialist'' to "provide feedback on unique local map requirements".

"Ground truth'' is map data gathered locally as opposed to via satellite imagery.

"The Maps team is looking for people with knowledge of mapping, great testing skills, and local expertise to help us build better and better maps,'' the ad reads.

"In this position, you will be responsible for the quality of map data for your region. You will test changes to map data, provide feedback on unique local map requirements, collect ground truth information, and evaluate competing products.''

In December, Victoria Police advised people not to use the software after a number of tourists were led off course and left stranded in sweltering conditions.

Six motorists had to be rescued from Victoria's Murray-Sunset National Park, where they were stranded in temperatures of up to 46 degrees, after following dodgy Apple Maps directions to Mildura, about 70km away.

Victoria's Country Fire Authority this month also blamed the software for dangerous inaccuracies in its FireReader bushfire information app, which relies on Apple Maps.

The CFA said a number of Victorian towns were located incorrectly on the maps, which made the reporting and tracking of bushfires difficult.

Apple chief executive Tim Cook apologised for the maps debacle shortly after the app's launch in September, saying the company "fell short''.
