A TEENAGE driver arrested for allegedly doing burnouts and trying to outrun police in the early hours of Sunday has joined friends on Facebook to mock police.

Koen Attard, 19, was photographed by the passenger who was with him about 2am on Sunday, at Direk, in Adelaide's north, when it is alleged he was doing burnouts in his silver Ford sedan, before fleeing from police and crashing into a gutter.

The picture, showing Attard handcuffed and in the back of a police car, has been turned into memes mocking the police and posted on Attard's Facebook page and other car club member sites.

Attard had commented on the posts, saying he told the arresting police officer he had tried to outrun them because he thought he would win, but the comments were removed soon after The Advertiser raised the memes with him.

Attard, who has been charged with driving in a dangerous manner and failing to stop, told The Advertiser he had nothing to do with producing the memes and denied he was mocking police over the serious incident.

"There's nothing to mock the police about ... they are doing their job," he said.

"I didn't want anyone really knowing about (the incident) ... but I know some photographs have been posted."

Attard said his arrest came after up to 80 cars had gathered in the area as part of a car cruise. "Everyone got out of there pretty quick when the cops came," he said.

Police will allege that about 2am on Sunday, they were called to Edinburgh Road after reports of several cars doing burnouts.

Police briefly pursued a silver Ford sedan, before it collided with the gutter and came to a stop.

Attard, from Plympton, was bailed to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court at a later date. His car was impounded for 28 days.

"With the Clipsal 500 starting this week, this is a timely reminder to all road users to drive responsibly," a police spokesman said.

Attard said he would not take part in any hoon driving in the future. "I'll go to the track if I want to do anything like that," he said.
