Legends combine for rock of middle-agers

Legends on tour

AUSTRALIAN rock icons Daryl Braithwaite, Joe Camilleri, James Reyne and Ross Wilson will embark on their first joint tour in April and May.

Their Time of My Life tour is sponsored by APIA, the insurance company for over-50s, and while the veteran quartet is ready for the jokes, they are happy to have backing for an extensive national tour.

"I think it's great someone can see the value of great songs played by artists who still have something to say," Camilleri said.

The tour will see each act perform for around 30 minutes, then combine for an all-star finale.

"We've all got pretty deep catalogues," Wilson said. "To fit into 30 minutes what you've been doing for 30 or 40 years is hard. But we're looking forward to singing on each other's songs."

While Braithwaite regularly plays Sherbet hits and Ross Wilson has toured with previous bands Daddy Cool and Mondo Rock, Reyne admits to having a problem with people expecting him to play copious amounts of Australian Crawl songs.

"I went through years having people say `can we please hear such and such song' and I wouldn't play it just to piss them off," Reyne said. "All the stuff I do now is much better than what I did back then. But I've started to embrace some of my past, some of the songs don't stand up because you can contemporise yourself through the past. You remind people you're still here and making new music. People are still surprised we're putting albums out. Radio stations say they won't play my new songs because people just want to hear classics. But if you play any of our new songs six times a day for the next three months, they could be considered classics, too."

Camilleri has also come to terms with performing hits by his bands Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons and the Black Sorrows.

"I don't have a problem with the past now. I did for a while. Something like this tour is an opportunity to look back for a minute because we're always going forward. We've all been around for a while, we're all still active, we're all still making records, we all still work all the time. We all still believe we have something to say, even though there's people who think you're just hits-and-memories material. They don't realise you're still part of the fabric of Australian music. But it's nice to embrace the things you've done in the past too."
