THE Hilltop Hoods have postponed their upcoming North American tour citing a "serious family matter".

The South Australian hip-hop trio and multiple ARIA winners were due to begin the tour of the US and Canada on April 14.

The group announced the "indefinite postponement" on their Facebook site and Twitter.

"We apologise for any inconvenience, but we need to take these measures due to a serious family matter," they said.

"We'll have more information on our return to North America later in the year.

"We thank you for your understanding."

The trio are scheduled to play at the Clipsal 500 this Friday.

Matt Lambert, aka MC Suffer, would not elaborate on the reason for cancelling the US tour when contacted by adelaidenow, but said it was unlikely to affect their Clipsal appearance.

The US "Drinking From the Sun" tour was to run through 17 cities in the US and Canada.
