IT is a tale of modern pop stardom. Two popular young American actors Malcolm Kelley and Tony Oller uploaded covers they recorded during downtime in their trailer on the set of a Nickleodeon series Gigantic.

When US hitmakers Emanuel Kiriakou and Evan Bogart stumbled on to a video of MKTO performing Chris Brown’s Champion on YouTube, they promised the duo a record deal and chart success.

They can now tick Australia off their hitlist with the pop duo arriving in Sydney on Sunday to discover their debut single, Thank You, has broken into the top 5.

Unlike the brattish behaviour of some overnight music sensations, the refreshingly exuberant pair throw pizza parties for their fans and relentlessly tweet their thanks to radio stations for playing their song.

Kelley, who starred in Lost, and Oller who also featured in the Disney series As the Bell Rings said while acting offered them a showbusiness apprenticeship, YouTube has given them a music career.

"That's where kids find the next big thing these days. And the business is looking for new talent there too," Oller said.

"This is the fastest way to get your fanbase up."

It doesn't hurt that Thank You is a clever and sarcastic pop anthem aimed sqaurely as today's politicians.

"Thank you for feeding us years of lies, Thank you for the wars you left us to fight, Thank you for the world you ruined overnight, But we'll be fine, yeah we'll be fine," the pair sing.

Oller said music remains a powerful way to engage young people in politics, with the Thank You video clicking almost two million views in two months.

"I don't think this generation gets enough credit for wanting to be involved and it seems Australia gets this song even though we didn’t intend it to be an anthem for a generation," he said.

"I think every generation screws something up and there will probably be a song about us when we're grandparents."
