TOM Hardy looks set to battle Jason Statham to land a movie role which would confirm his "A-list" status.

The British stars have both carved out successful careers in Hollywood, with Hardy impressing with movies including The Dark Knight Rises and Lawless.

Statham is one of the biggest action stars in the film industry, starring in films such as Safe, and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Both have a proven track record of playing tough guys on the big screen.

Both stars are said to be interested in portraying Snake Plissken in an upcoming remake of Escape from New York.

"Jason is the type of actor who has the physical attributes and screen presence to reprise Snake," a Hollywood insider told New York Daily News' Confidential column.

"He has a proven track record as a leading man and would do a great job.

Tom was immense in The Dark Knight Rises and deserves to get a break in a top role. This could put him firmly in the A-list."

It was previously believed that Jeremy Renner and Gerard Butler were in the running for the role of Snake. However, New Line gave up the film rights in 2011 and the project has now been taken over by Studio Canal.

The original Escape from New York was released in 1981 and saw Kurt Russell play eye-patch wearing convict Snake. The movie was set in the future, where Manhattan is a maximum security prison and convicted bank robber Snake is sent to rescue the US President after he is taken hostage.

Movie bosses hope to secure either Statham or Hardy soon, so they can start production on the remake.

"Studio Canal wants to make sure they get one of the two men before the summer," the source added.
