Old-world style is a little bit new

MOST new gadgets are the sort of thing that might give your granny a bad turn, with big touch displays that lack obvious controls.

But dear old granny is likely to feel right at home with her first look at the new audio product from Geneva. Even the name WorldRadio is going to be reassuring.

This new-generation product clearly harps back to the classic shortwave radio in its simple design.

There's a knob on each side (left for power and volume, right for station selection), a display in the front, an antenna at the top and a solid carrying handle. Inside the box is a 3-inch speaker and it runs on a rechargeable battery designed to give five hours of audio.

Looks, however, can be deceptive. This isn't granny's old wireless, it is a FM/DAB+ digital radio that connects via Bluetooth (or cable via the audio-in port) to the music player of your choice.

Despite the name, it is not a "world radio" in the traditional sense of the term. You can tune into stations around the world on your iPhone or other device and then link it to the Geneva device, but really the WorldRadio is then just operating as a speaker.

To switch between the digital radio stations in your area, you turn the right-hand dial.

It's about weighing up the features that are important to you. This is portable and rechargeable, and it serves as a digital radio and a Bluetooth speaker for your smartphone or tablet.

On the downside, it has one speaker, putting it at a disadvantage against other wireless speakers for a similar price.
