REUNITED American chart-toppers Fall Out Boy have melted social media with the announcement Courtney Love and Sir Elton John will guest on their comeback record Save Rock And Roll.

Back in Australia for intimate sold-out fan shows to relaunch their career, FOB's Pete Wentz said fans were polarised by the news the controversial Hole frontwoman and widow of Kurt Cobain would feature on a track.

The queen of rock attitude reprises Britney Spear's signature line "It's Courtney, bitch" in an online teaser for the track which features the band chanting Rat-a-tat-tat.

"When we announced Courtney was on the song, the reaction on Facebook was only about 30 per cent positive while on Twitter it was about 80 per cent positive,'' Wentz said.

The band took an indefinite hiatus after breaking down during their last Australian tour a few years ago.

"One of the last times we were here was the break down - everyone was so burned out. The cold shoulder definitely did happen; when you're talking through managers, that's when it's bad,'' Wentz said.

While they took time out to indulge other projects, Wentz, Patrick Stump, Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley remained good friends, hanging out at each other's weddings and occasionally getting together to write.

Wentz said becoming a father - he was divorced from wife Ashlee Simpson in 2011 - had also changed his perspective on being in a band.

"It was healthy to have time off, to figure out my own life and be accountable," he said.

"I felt I was a pretty selfish person in my 20s; having a kid was good for me, it was a good catalyst for me to change."

Despite being off the radar for four years, Fall Out Boy have retained their loyal fanbase here, with their Sydney and Melbourne return shows this week selling out in minutes.

Their comeback single, My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up) has had more than five million views on Vevo.
