BILLY Joel has revealed he may quit touring after his one-off headlining performance at the inaugural Stone Music festival in Sydney next month.

The 63-year-old Piano Man said the show "will be a big test'' for his playing future even as his good friend Bruce Springsteen, who is the same age, delivers marathon concerts here on the Wrecking Ball tour.

"Yeah, I hear he's kicking ass down there,'' Joel said.

"I want to see if it's time for me to get off the stage. There's a time when an athlete says I can't swing the bat anymore.v "So I get to feel it out ... this will be a big test for me."

Joel said he cringed when he watches "oldies play shows on television" and the artist is trading on their glory days, shirking the high notes and not being able to physically carry the performance.

"I don't want to be that guy, I don't want to be Spinal Tap," he said.

Billy Joel's duet with college student goes viral

It has been more than four years since Joel played in Australia and he said he booked the Stone Music festival gig - and another performance at the annual new Orleans Jazz festival - because "I want to have fun''.

"It is always fun to play Australia and I want to have fun now, have a good time,'' he said.

Joel has gone viral in the past two weeks after connecting with younger fans on the latest round of his college Q&A sessions.

Vanderbilt University student Michael Pollack asked Joel if he could join him on stage to play his favourite song New York State Of Mind and his accomplished rendition, with the Piano Man singing, has enjoyed millions of views.

Joel will perform his only Australian concert on the second day of the Stone Music festival on April 21 at ANZ Stadium, supported by Icehouse, Guy Sebastian and more.
