SOL's custom cans out of the box

MOST headphones arrive in one piece, fully assembled and with a cord attached, ready to plug in and play music.

These SOL Republic headphones are the exception. The Master Tracks arrive in four pieces, like a consumer electronics puzzle.

The flexible headband borders the box's facade, while two stereo ear cups sit inside it, suspended on a clear strip of plastic. The headphone cable hides in the base of the box.

The four elements are not difficult to assemble but the unusual arrangement sets the tone for a different pair of headphones.

Users can position the ear cups by moving them up and down the headband, and that headband and the cord can be swapped for another, to customise these cans.

But the best thing about these headphones is their unexpectedly high quality considering their price.

Though they offer no noise-cancellation, the SonicSoft Speaker Pads sit on top of the ear and block out plenty of ambient noise. The included cord also offers a three-button remote control and microphone for use with a smartphone. From mid-range to bass sounds, the Master Tracks provide clear and impressive reproductions.

Not everyone will appreciate their on-ear positioning, as it can squash ears. Nor will everyone like the bass-heavy tuning.

SOL Republic delivers a highly customisable, high quality pair of headphones for under $150 in the Master Tracks, however, and that should be commended.
