MOVIE-GOERS flocked to see the wizard last weekend, helping the Aussie box office emerge from a month of doldrums.

The Wizard of Oz prequel Oz the Great and Powerful, starring James Franco, grossed almost $4.8 million over its first four days of release, the best debut since New Year’s Day release Life of Pi collected almost $8 million in six days.

Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained had the next best opening weekend of the year so far, taking $3.8 million back in January.

Aussies spent almost $25 million going to the movies on the first weekend of 2013, drawn to cinemas by blockbuster holiday releases including Pi, The Hobbit and Les Misérables. But overall box office declined steadily after that, dipping below $10 million on the past two weekends.

Oz the Great and Powerful - which explores how the Wizard (played by Franco) came to rule the land of Oz - reversed that trend, giving overall box office a 10 per cent lift. However, Oz was a long way ahead of the pack, with the No.2 film of the weekend, gross-out comedy 21 and Over, taking just $821,576.

A $210 million, special effects extravaganza, Oz defied poor reviews to open strongly in the US, too - its $78.5 million haul a 2013 best. Worldwide, the film enjoyed a near-$150 million weekend.
