DANIEL Radcliffe has landed a starring role in forthcoming thriller Tokyo Vice.

The former Harry Potter star will play an American reporter working the crime beat at a Tokyo-based newspaper, according to Deadline.

When his character meets mob boss Tadamasa Goto, he's forced to weigh the personal cost of chasing a dangerous lead.

The film is based on the true events described in Jake Adelstein's memoir. In the Nineties the journalist became the first staff writer at the Yomiuri Shinbun newspaper who was not Japanese. The tome chronicles the death threats he received after he exposed Goto.

The circumstances forced him to quit the newspaper.

The dramatisation of his 2010 memoir Tokyo Vice: An American Reporter on the Police Beat in Japan will be helmed by music video and commercial director Anthony Mandler.

JT Rogers adapted the work for the screen.

John Lesher and Adam Kassan are producing for Le Grisbi Productions.

Production is scheduled to get underway early next year.

Radcliffe, 23, will next star in romance drama Kill Your Darlings.

The John Krokidas film, co-starring Dane DeHaan, Elizabeth Olsen and Michael C. Hall, is scheduled for US release in October.
