Facebook street party turns violent

Facebook

A street party posted on Facebook became unruly and police had to be called when crowds swelled to about 200. Source: AP

A STREET party posted on social media site Facebook drew a crowd of 200 and become violent.

Two teenagers may face charges over the street party on West Street at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast that went out of control when the address was posted on Facebook, goldcoast.com.au reported.

HORSE OWNERS 'BULLIED' BY POLICE ON FACEBOOK

The party, which began at 7pm on Saturday, struck fear into residents of the street who called the police when crowd began to swell and become violent.

Many of the teens refused to move on, instead abusing police officers who responded to complaints from neighbours.

A police spokesman said the gathering was arranged through posts on social media.

JURY GETTING OFF THEIR FACEBOOKS

"Police were called to reports of a large disturbance in West St about 7pm," he said.

"Several liquor infringement notices were handed out on the spot to teenagers drinking underage and in public.

"A 15-year-old and a 16-year-old are assisting police with their inquiries. No charges have been laid at this time."

A West St resident, who would not be named, said the large group of young people was swearing, smashing bottles and fighting.

"People were scared to leave their houses. It is an issue police need to crack down on," she said.

"I have noticed groups of teens loitering around the streets and drinking in public a lot lately. Something needs to be done to deter them."

Locals say loitering youths is a growing problem in Burleigh and a prime reason the suburb needs a police beat presence.

Pirate Party sails into parliament

Iceland vote

Leaders of the Bright Future and the Left Green Movement join the Independence Party's Bjarni Benediktsson, Pirate Party's Birgita Jonsdottir, the Progressive Party's Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson and the leader of the Social Democratic Alliance for a TV debate on election night in Reykjavk. ICELAND'S Pirate Party, a file-sharing activist movement, had wind in its sails in the country's election, becoming the first of its kind to win seats in a national parliament.

The libertarian movement, modelled on its Swedish namesake which has been campaigning for copyright reform since 2006, garnered 5.1 per cent of the vote, just above the five per cent election threshold, giving it three of the 63 seats in the Icelandic legislature.

The party was already represented in the parliament, known as the Althing, through co-founder Birgitta Jonsdottir, 46, an activist and poet who in the previous election ran under the banner of the Citizen's Movement.

Jonsdottir told public broadcaster RUV the results were "historic".

Founded in November last year, the party is young compared to its Swedish counterpart - which pioneered the movement and has two members of the European Parliament - as well as the German Pirate Party which has won seats in state legislatures.

After an inconspicuous launch, the Icelandic group made a splash in the polls less than a month before the vote, passing the five per cent election threshold that, in addition to Althing representation, gives it access to state funding.

Its internet-based campaign slammed the growing role of corporate interests in politics, appealing to protest voters and stealing some of the supporters who helped elect the Left-Green movement in 2009.

"We're not vying to get a seat in the government. But we're ready to work with any party that will be interested in the issues we've been raising," Jonsdottir told AFP.

Those issues included "21st century laws" on online privacy, freedom of information and government transparency, she said.

"Many people see Iceland as a kind of laboratory for democracy. We have to live up to this reputation," she said.

The Springsteen party just gets bigger

IF you want to throw a party where 17,000 people agree on the playlist, put on the greatest hits of Bruce Springsteen.

IF you want to throw a party where 17,000 people agree on the playlist, put on the greatest hits of Bruce Springsteen.

At the opening night of a three-show stand at the Allphones Arena, Springsteen turned the venue into the ultimate house party.

There was your mate in the corner singing every word of every song, forbidding you from changing the record.

Over on the dance floor were all your girlfriends desperately hoping The Boss would pick them to sing along to Waitin' On A Sunny Day or embrace during Dancing In The Dark.

Outside in the top rows were the best friends arm-in-arm screaming "tramps like us, baby we were Born To Run".

On the stage in living, sweaty, passionate colour was the house band, who just happened to be Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

He is the master conductor of the ultimate show band, an entertainer who knows his audience has parted with a lot of cold hard cash to spend a few hours with one of their rock heroes.

The Boss rewards the investment and then gives you interest. You can't start a fire without a spark, as he sings in Dancing In The Dark, and he just kept striking the flint of hits and memories playing to both the train spotting setlist fans and those who were curious newcomers.

The set again drew from his latest album Wrecking Ball and was peppered with history, from acknowledging St Patrick's Day through to The Rising, Hungry Heart, My City Of Ruins and The Ghost Of Tom Joad.

Crowd participation was encouraged and in the second half flourished as everyone got just as sweaty and joyous as The Boss.

He crowd surfed, bounced on pianos, and played like it was the only reason for living.

Good luck to the rest of the rock world beating this show this year.

Bruce Springsteen plays at Allphones Arena on Wednesday and Friday.

Kathy McCabe  tweeted  live from The Boss's Sydney concert

Earlier, it was revealed that Springsteen had rested Born In the USA - one of his signature songs - from his set-list.

Several fans hit Twitter over the weekend to express their disbelief he wasn't playing it here.

It appears there are only a handful of songs guaranteed to make the cut.  Several are from his latest record Wrecking Ball, including the title track Death To My Hometown and Shackled and Drawn.

Other crowd favourites which were aired both nights in Brisbane included Waitin' On A Sunny Day, The Ghost of Tom Joad, Spirit In The Night, Badlands and My City of Ruins.

The radio hits Born To Run, Dancing In the Dark and closer Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out appeared in both encores and should remain in the closing set during the Australian tour as they did on many of the American concerts last year.

Inside Vanity Fair Oscars after party

THE Vanity Fair Oscars after party is THE must-stop event for winners, near-winners, the beautiful people, their stunning and accomplished friends and anybody who's anybody, really.

When the golden statues had all been handed out, dresses changed and noses re-powdered, the real "it" crowd of the Academy Awards teetered off to party the night away at the Sunset Tower, West Hollywood.

"Inside, you couldn't move a foot without bumping into someone fabulous and famous," wrote USA Today of the glamourous shindig held by Vanity Fair editor-in-chief Graydon Carter.

Here's just some of what went down on the night:

One woman’s sole job was to continuously hoist a section of Jennifer Lawrence’s silver-metallic dress "to the southern hemisphere of her buttocks so the best actress can use her knees properly", reported The Washington Post. After making headlines with her trip up the stairs, Lawrence was keen to avoid another stumble, declaring to a handler: “I need to change, I can’t walk,” while reportedly looking slightly traumatised.

Around zero-dark-thirty (midnight) those bearing Oscars began to arrive. While most recipients waved them around and posed for photos, one golden statue rested unloved and almost forgotten on a couch, until "a tall man reaches his weathered hand backward to make sure it’s still there". Daniel Day-Lewis a.k.a D-Day.

Sally Field ditched the stilettos for a pair of comfy runners, which she was more than happy to reveal underneath her long red Valentino gown. The 66-year-old sprinted down the arrivals line at the glittering bash a few inches shorter but wearing a smile of relief.

The Washington Post caught Hugh Jackman enduring "eight lonely seconds of having no one talk at him", while others reported he was the most sought after for photos by other guests.

Forget the caviar, foie gras and oysters, the most popular dish of the night was an In-N-Out burger in a paper sleeve - courtesy of the stand parked out the front. "I love how they are so highbrow, but they serve In-N-Out burgers," Daniel Day-Lewis told USA today.

Google glasses were the hit gadget of the night. Google founder Sergey Brin and his wife, Anne Wojcicki, traversed the party wearing a pair, shooting video and letting guests try on the prototypes. “We’ve come a number of times, and no one ever wants to talk to us,” Ms. Wojcicki said. “Now we’re very popular.”

Anne Hathaway "got her nips under control" writes Perez Hilton and ditched the notorious pink Prada number for a silky Saint Laurent blue number that continued to "underwhelm". The AnneHathawayNipples Twitter account would have been somewhat disappointed they didn't get to make an equally bold statement at the after-party.

The LA Times reports Reese Witherspoon "looking exhausted and a bit dejected" and "was escorted out early".

swank

Hilary Swank wore a bright red dress so long and puffy that she had trouble fitting into a bathroom stall. “It’s ridiculous, right?” she joked to the women waiting in line with her, writes the LA Times.

The LA Times also reported the night's best unscripted moment occurred when a "very serious" Tommy Lee Jones pushed past a server offering him mini-cupcakes, several of which had the words “Tommy Lee Jones” written on them in red frosting. Trays full of cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery were decorated with names of films and nominees.

Russell Brand showed up looking cleaner than anyone had ever seen him. Perhaps Katy Perry has had a bit on an influence on the notoriously grungy comedian?

Casey Affleck was at the after-party to throw back a couple of drinks with his brother and Oscar winner, Ben. Sounding almost relieved he didn't have to suit up for the ceremony, he told The Washington Post that being at home was a much better ticket. “It’s like the Super Bowl: it’s so much more comfortable, and you have a better view."

jennifer

The Jennifers had trouble keeping themselves on their feet on Oscars night. Following on from Lawrence's very public face-plant while accepting her award, Jennifer Garner stumbled on her long train and almost lost her footing while posing for a posse of paparazzi on the Vanity Fair red carpet. Awkward.

Meanwhile, at Elton John's after party, Britney Spears' new hair colour, Heidi Klum's boobs, Kim Kardashians' baby bump and Jim Carrey's bizarre footwear all came out to party on Oscars night.

Police investigate Facebook 'party page'

FIVE teenagers have been treated for alcohol-related injuries and police are launching an investigation after a party promoted on Facebook went wrong last night.

Up to 1000 people converged on Tamborine Memorial Hall at Mount Tamborine on the Gold Coast from 7pm for a party dubbed 'Yo-Yo's Round 2'.

An ambulance spokeswoman confirmed crews were called to the hall for five different alcohol related injuries and two people, including an 18-year-old, were transported to Logan hospital for precautionary reasons.

Channel Nine reported two of the five cases were 14-year-olds.

The Coomera police are conducting follow-up investigations after they were called to the party at around 7.45pm.

Organisers of the party said they legally rented the hall and security were on hand, however police described the mood of the crowd as 'very aggressive' and reported the security was not adequate, with several fights breaking out throughout the night.

Both uniformed and plain clothes police from North Tamborine, Beaudesert, Coomera, Jimboomba, Nerang and the dog squad were needed to control the situation.

Buses and private transport were used to transport party-goers to the site but there was inadequate transport to get those in attendance off the mountain.

Police monitored the situation until buses could be organised to transport them away from the scene.

The party was not registered with the police, and both the owners of the hall and the organisers of the party will be investigated.

The party was promoted on a Facebook site called 'Brisbane Parties', which is described as the 'official' page to post and promote open events and house parties in the Brisbane area.
