THE reformation of his '70s new wave rock outfit the Boomtown Rats is not Sir Bob Geldof's superannuation tour but the realisation of a teen dream.

Geldof said he could be flippant and attribute the upcoming Australian tour of the I Don't Like Mondays hitmakers "to the money" but it was the offer to play the Isle Of Wight festival which triggered the reunion.

"You don't need to pay for mine (superannuation); I do ok, thanks," he said yesterday.

"It will be good money-wise for a couple of the guys who haven't done as well as myself."

He agreed to rehearse with the band when the Isle Of Wight festival promoter approached The Rats guitarist Garry Roberts to sound out Geldof on getting back on stage.

"Seeing Hendrix and The Who and The Doors and Leonard Cohen in one hit there, it was a formative moment for me. I needed that in my belt," he said.

While he appreciates nostalgia would be the motivating force for fans to buy a ticket, Geldof insists it is the enduring resonance of their 70s and 80s hits including Looking After No.1 and Rat Trap in these tough economic times which also motivated him to agree to sing them again now.

"Really, if it seemed dated, it wasn't happening," he said.

While he preferred to go off the record about the chances on the political fortunes of his mate Kevin Rudd yesterday, he was more than happy to signal his pride in the musical talents of his daughter Pixie.

Triple J ambushed him by playing a demo of her song You which she recorded under the moniker Violet and uploaded to Soundcloud last year.

It was the first time her father had heard the song.

"She's a f...ing good writer. I listened to it like I was listening to a new band - really I could distance myself - and f...ing hell, she's definitely got a voice from God. Well, it's actually from me, which is kind of the same thing," he said, laughing.

The Boomtown rats perform at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on May 20, Sydney Entertainment Centre on May 21, Melbourne Hisense Arena on May 23, Adelaide Entertainment Centre on May 27 and Perth Challenge Stadium on May 28.
