IMPERIAL FORCES are being called to rally behind Darth Vader: Disney has launched a popularity contest, seeking to single out fan's favourite Star Wars characters.

The official Star Wars event is titled This is Madness. It represents one of Disney's first attempts to milk the tianic Star Wars franchise it purchased from George Lucas for $4 billion in October last year.

Cashing in on the clash between the Dark Side and the Light Side, starwars.com is giving the major contenders in the character popularity contest their own say.

Darth Vader has stolen the march with a "transmission" extolling the virtues of the contest and making his own pitch for fan-base supremacy.

"With your backing, I will win this competition and crush all who stand in my way," the Sith Lord extols.

"Together we will unleash the power of the dark side and I will have bragging rights over both Obi Wan and the Emperor - which is pretty awesome. So, as much as I hate democracy, vote now, vote often, and vote Vader! It is the only way."
